With over twelve million people the Sao Paolo area is easily the largest metropolis in Brazil. But it’s also notable for another kind of population…motorcycles.
There’s been such a rapid expansion of numbers in recent months that this form of transport is becoming of really major importance. The DMV-SP ( State Department of Motor Vehicles) estimates that there are now very nearly one million motorbikes. That’s an average of one per every three households and represents an increase of 3.6% over last year.
There are still many more cars or trucks of course, but the popularity of two-wheeled transport is starting to close the gap. Relative cheapness to buy and run, ease of parking and storage and ‘nippy-ness’ in traffic congestion are all factors, say the Department.
